PRP with Dr Berenter

I’m Dr. Jay Berenter, a foot and ankle surgeon at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California. I want to talk today about Platelet-Rich Plasma or PRP. It’s one of our newest treatment technologies that we use for conditions that have been unresponsive to traditional medical care.

The most successful ones I’ve used for this involve arthritis in the big toe joint, chronic Achilles tendinitis or plantar fasciitis – either one of those two that have failed to respond to all of the other traditional methods that we typically use. It’s a very simple procedure where all we do is draw blood like going to the lab where you would give blood for a blood test. We take it out, put it in a test tube and actually use our centrifuge here to spin it down.

When we spin the blood, that concentrates the platelets and the stem cells into a very rich conglomerate of material that we can inject back in to these chronically painful areas. So basically, we’re supercharging your repair process. And we’ve had great success in dealing with arthritis in the big toe joint and Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis when all of the other treatment methods have not been successful.

There’s no risk at all involved – that’s the beauty of the procedure. It’s your own blood cells and stem cells being re-injected but concentrated into a particularly painful area. If you have any further questions involving PRP or Platelet-Rich Plasma, please contact my office.
