I’m San Diego Podiatrist Dr. Jay Berenter and today I’d like to talk to you about custom functional orthotics. We’ve been doing custom orthotics for over 25 years – in fact we’ve been a provider to the United States Olympic training center in Chula Vista over the past 15 to 16 years. And because of all the confusion today in the marketplace, I think it’s important to get a true understanding of what custom orthotics are. We have eliminated plaster or foam casting because they ARE inaccurate most of the time.
We use a computerized optical scanning system to get a true impression of the foot. It takes about 2 weeks to get it back. This is the most accurate means of getting a model of your foot to make the orthotic off of. We make probably 30-40 different kinds from sports version with full length covers that are cushioned and padded so you don’t feel the hard plastic to dress orthotics that can fit in women’s shoes in terms of pumps or heels – to everyday versions that fit in most causal shoes. We tailor them to meet your specific needs in terms of shoes, activity level and actual foot deformity.
So, it’s important if you are going to get a custom functional orthotic, that you see a provider that knows how to take a good impression of your foot – they can actually diagnose your specific foot problem and your specific foot type, and I would encourage you to find someone that has a lot of experience with that.
